I haven't seen a musical intrument like that. What is it called, please,Sirpa.
I'm sorry, but I don't know either what it is. This medieval market is a huge happening with several different performances going on at the same time and I stopped to follow this just for a while.
Thanks to a friend I was happy to get the answer to your question! The ladies are from Sweden and the instrument is a nyckelharpa, a traditional Swedish musical instrument. This is from Wikipedia: A nyckelharpa (literally "key harp", plural nyckelharpor), sometimes called a keyed fiddle, is a traditional Swedish musical instrument. It is a string instrument or chordophone. Its keys are attached to tangents which, when a key is depressed, serve as frets to change the pitch of the string.
Thanks, Sirpa, for the research. Much ppreciated. I am now ashamed to say I had come across this on a Swedish friend's blog but had forgotten it until you mentioned the name.
That is an interesting instrument!
Isn't it! More about it above.
The contrast between the colours of the dresses is just wonderful! They are so bright!P.S. I think I'd love to see such a market!
That's true!Medieval Market is every summer in Turku. You should visit it next summer!
There is also contrast between the young ladies and the old nyckelharpa. Their phlegmatic expression is interesting. Is it in harmony with their music?Lasse
May be it actually was in harmony with their music!
